Celebrating Chinese New Year

The Fountains at Washington House kicked off their first successful event of the year celebrating the Chinese New Year with an outstanding performance by The Chinese Music Society of Greater Washington. The event started with a mix and mingle in the lobby with delicious Asian inspired hors d’oeuvres and a Chinese themed dinner especially prepared for the occasion by Phyllis Koudelka (Dining Services Director), Chef Darnel and The Fountains Dining Services Team. After the dinner, the residents were treated to an extraordinary concert with traditional Chinese music showcasing Chinese instruments such as Erhu (Chinese violin/fiddle with two strings), Pipa (Chinese bamboo flute), and Yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer).

The concert was led by Mr. Duke Tang, a well-known Chinese musician in the Washington Metropolitan area. Originally from Beijing China he moved to the US in the 1980’s, studied composition, conducting, and music at Shenyang Conservatory of Music (China), University of Guam and University of Maryland. He is the chairman of the Chinese Music Society of Greater Washington, the music director of Washington Chinese Traditional Orchestra, and a member of the Music Teacher National Association. The show ended with a graceful rendition of a Chinese traditional dance which was the highlight of the event.
